When to Choose a Same Day Dentistry Visit

Same day dentistry can make getting dental treatments a lot easier. It allows individuals to address problems with their smile with a single trip to the dentist.

The importance of same day dental care

Some dental issues require urgent treatment, and same day visits are the solution. Patients can make appointments to see a dentist on the same day, and this gives the person access to fast treatments that can end up saving their teeth. For example, a knocked-out tooth can be reattached if the person makes it to a dentist within a few hours of the injury. Not being able to get treatment within this crucial window means the person might end up losing the tooth and be forced to replace it with a restoration.

In other cases, restorations used for treatments can be made and installed during a same day dentistry visit. The traditional way of getting restorations like crowns, veneers, bridges, onlays, and inlays requires at least two trips to the dentist. The first visit is used to prepare the patient's teeth for the restoration. Enamel or decayed material might be removed to make space for the restoration. An impression of the patient's teeth is taken and that is sent to a dental lab. It takes about two weeks to get the customized restoration to the dentist. The dentist takes off any temporary restorations used during the second visit and cements the customized restoration into place.

With same day dentistry, patients no longer need to make multiple trips to the dentist to get the restorations they need. The dentist can use CEREC machines to make restorations onsite. This convenience allows the dentist to complete a patient's treatment during a single visit.

Common issues that require same day dentistry visits

Infections

Tooth infections are serious dental issues that can have life-threatening effects if the infection spreads to other parts of the body. Infections are typically accompanied by severe toothaches that make it impossible to focus on anything else. The severity of this pain often forces people to head straight to the dentist.

Dentists usually treat infections by performing root canal therapy or extracting the infected tooth. Extractions are only recommended when the tooth is too damaged to be saved, or the infection threatens to reach other parts of the body. A tooth that has been repaired with a root canal is often covered with a crown. Some same day dentistry practices can make the crown onsite, allowing the patient to complete their treatment with a single visit.

Knocked out tooth

A knocked-out tooth might feel like the worst thing ever when it occurs but it typically can be reattached with same day dentistry care. If that is not an option, the dentist can replace the tooth with a prosthetic like a dental implant. A severely broken tooth also requires urgent dental care.
